7 students of Ratlam medical college suspended for a year for ragging juniors

‘Zero-tolerance for ragging’ says medical education minister; FIR registered

Seven students of the 2020 batch of Government Medical College, Ratlam, in Madhya Pradesh were suspended from college and hostel for a year after being found involved in ragging of junior students.

Besides, an FIR has been registered against the students in a local police station, and hostel warden has been removed from his post, state Medical Education Minister Vishvas Sarang said in a tweet.

The disciplinary action came after a video of the alleged ragging went viral on social media. In the video, some young men are seen standing in a row, their backs to the wall and head bent, while two are seen slapping them. The video was said to have been shot in the hostel of the GMC, Ratlam. The incident reportedly occurred on July 27.

“There will be zero tolerance in cases of ragging. I had issued directives of immediate action after getting information about ragging of students in Ratlam Medical College hostel. Seven students of 2020 batch, involved in ragging, have been suspended for a year,” Sarang tweeted on Sunday.

The Ratlam incident came close on the heels of a complaint of ragging at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Indore, last week. The junior students had filed a complaint saying they were called to different premises out of the college campus and made to perform obscene tasks, including sexual acts with classmates. Seniors also forced them to pass obscene remarks on female classmates, the students said in the complaint. The students were allegedly being ragged for the past three months.

Following a probe, the college administration had found the complaint to be true and an FIR was registered against unnamed senior students at Sayongitaganj police station in Indore, according to sources.
