Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi accepted the resignation of state's advocate general A.P.S. Deol. He had submitted his resignation to the chief minister on November 1.
“Punjab cabinet accepted the resignation of advocate general A.P.S Deol,” the CM said at a press conference, in which Navjot Singh Sidhu was present.
Sidhu and a few other Congress leaders in the state has been opposing the appointment of Deol, who had represented former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in cases related to the 2015 post-sacrilege police firing incidents.
Sidhu, who had withdrawn his resignation as Punjab Congress chief recently, had said he will re-assume charge only after the state government replaced the advocate general.
AICC Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary had, on Monday, held a meeting with the CM and Sidhu amid reports of tension between the two leaders. The government decision to accept the resignation of Deol, barely a few day after Channi expressed his confidence in the advocate general's ability to get results, signals that a truce has prevailed between the CM and Sidhu. There were reports that Channi had initially refused to accept the resignation of Deol.
A few days ago, the cricketer-turned-politician had accused Deol of subverting justice in the sacrilege case. Sidhu was reacting Deol's allegation that the former was obstructing the functioning of the state government and his office, and "spreading misinformation to gain political advantage".
Apart from announcing acceptance of resignation of Deol, the CM also said, "We have sent names of police officers of over 30 years of service. Out of them, the Centre will send a panel in the coming days. We will select a new director general of police from among the panel."
Other announcements made by the CM include the decision of the government to regularise the services of 36,000 govt employees and raise rate of minimum wages in the state.
