A fire broke out in a 61-storey residential building in South Mumbai's Lower Parel today. The fire erupted on the 19th floor of the One Avighna Park building on Currey Road shortly before noon.
One person has been reported dead. As per the Mumbai Fire Department, the person jumped from the 19th floor of the building.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that the fire broke out due to short-circuit in a flat. At least 12 fire engines and water tankers rushed to the spot, the official said.
The fire was doused around 2.04pm. Pednekar and other senior district officials reached the spot immediately after the incident was reported.
Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray also visited the spot, sharing pictures of his visit on Twitter.
"Visited the spot of the unfortunate fire incident at One Avighna Park and met with the rescued residents of the building. Fire has been doused and cooling ops are underway," he wrote.
"This incident in a high rise building only reiterates how important fire safety drills, fire safety norms like sprinklers, fire refuge areas are in every building," he added to the Twitter thread.
The thick smoke could be seen from several kilometeres away.
Municipal Commissioner I.S. Chahal has ordered a probe into the incident.
