In what comes as a setback for the Congress, the party's acting state president in Tripura, Pijush Kanti Biswas, resigned from the post.
His resignation comes merely a few days after the Congress party's women's wing chief Sushmita Dev quit and switched over to the TMC. Biswas is reportedly close to Dev.
Biswas took to Twitter to announce his resignation and and retirement from politics.
"With sincere gratitude I thank all Congress Leaders, supporters for your cooperation during my tenure as TPCC President (acting). Today I have resigned from the post of President and retired from politics as well. My sincere gratitude towards Hon’ble CP Smt. Sonia Gandhiji," he tweeted.
“I will be out of politics for the time being. I have sent my resignation letter to the party president Sonia Gandhi today," news agency IANS quoted him as saying.
Biswas was appointed state unit chief of the party in December 2019
His resignation comes even as the Congress is attempting to regain foothold in the Northeast and Tripura is to go to assembly polls in two years.
Biswas's proximity to Sushmita Dev and his resignation merely a few days after she quit the party to join the TMC have led to speculations that he too may join the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
"I don't think I have compromised my ideology in joining the TMC. My joining the TMC is unconditional, and I will take any responsibility given to me by Mamata Banerjee," Dev had said after joining the party.
