A three-justice bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday informed it would decide on August 16 whether to issue notices over multiple petitions filed in relation to the snooping allegations involving the Pegasus spyware.
Multiple persons, including journalists, had filed pleas seeking a probe into the Pegasus scandal. Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought more time to reply, requesting the Supreme Court not to take up the matter before Friday (August 13).
Chief Justice N.V. Ramana, who headed the bench, noted he would decide on issuance of notices on August 16. The other members of the bench are Justices Vineet Saran and Surya Kant.
During the hearing, the bench was quoted by Bar and Bench as telling the petitioners, "Any of the petitioners who are interested in the matter and saying things in newspapers, we expect they will answer our queries through a proper debate in court hall and not outside... If you want to say anything on social media, Twitter, etc., it's your call. But if a debate is going on here, please answer here. Have some respect for the system."
Live Law quoted Chief Justice Ramana as saying "We don't want parallel debates. You have faith in the system. There must be discipline.”
