Can Gayatri Mantra, Pranayama help in cure of COVID-19? Govt sponsors AIIMS, Rishikesh study

Even as the country is witnessing an alarming increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and the vaccination drive is picking pace with 3.5 to 4 crore people vaccinated so far, the All India Institute of Medical Science, Rishikesh, in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is conducting a research to find out the effect of performing Pranayama and chanting Gayatri Mantra on COVID-19 patients, in addition to the regular treatment.

According to an Outlook report, 20 patients have been identified and they have been divided into two groups. Members of the first group, 'Group A', will chant the Gayatri Mantra and do an hour of Pranayama, while patients in 'Group B' will only receive the usual treatment. The trial is for a period of 14 days, during which the hospital will observe if there are changes in the inflammation levels in the body of patients.

Before the trial, inflammation levels of the body will be recorded, and after the 14-day period, tests will be conducted again to see the changes in the inflammatory markers.

Patients in 'Group A' will be given instructions on how to chant the Gayatri Mantra and do perform Pranayama through video conferencing and will also be given instructional videos and pictures which will help them.

Meanwhile, India saw 39,726new coronavirus infections being reported on Friday, the highest single day rise recorded so far this year, taking the nationwide COVID-19tally of cases to1,15,14,331. The daily rise in infections (39,726) was the highest recorded in 110 days. A total of 1,59,370 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 53,138 from Maharashtra, 12,573 from Tamil Nadu, 12,415 from Karnataka, 10,949 from Delhi, 10,300 from West Bengal, 8,753 from Uttar Pradesh and 7,186 from Andhra Pradesh.
