Stalin, Palaniswami, Kamal: How much wealth do they have?

Both Stalin and Palaniswami stated they owed no dues to the government

On Monday, leaders of prominent political parties in Tamil Nadu filed their nomination papers to contest in the April 6 Assembly polls.

Not surprisingly, a key point of focus was the assets these leaders declared.

M.K. Stalin

DMK president and chief ministerial candidate M.K. Stalin declared he had movable assets of a little over Rs 4.94 crore. His immovable assets of land and residential buildings were valued at Rs 2.24 crore. Stalin also stated his wife had movable assets valued at Rs 30,52,854 and possessed Rs 24.77 lakh worth old gold jewels. Stalin is contesting from the Kolathur constituency.

Stalin stated he had Rs 50,000 cash in hand and owed no dues to banks or government agencies. Stalin declared his sources of income were MLA salary, bank deposits and rent.

In his 2016 poll affidavit, Stalin had stated that his movable assets were Rs 80.33 lakh and immovable assets were worth Rs 3.33 crore. Stalin's son, Udhayanidhi, fielded in the polls for the first time ever this year on behalf of DMK, declared Rs 21.13 crore movable assets, including a 2016 model four-wheeler with a 'procurement price' of Rs 1.77 crore. Udhayanidhi had immovable assets valued at Rs 6.54 crore,

E.K. Palaniswami

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who is leading the AIADMK and NDA front, declared movable assets worth over Rs 47 lakh while filing his nomination for the April 6 Assembly polls from Edapadi constituency and said he had no immovable assets in his name.

Palaniswami stated that his wife's movable assets were Rs 1,04,11,631 and that of the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) was Rs 50.21 lakh. He declared immovable assets in his wife's name at Rs 1.78 crore and Rs 2.10 crore under the HUF, including ancestral property.

He owed a "hand loan" of Rs 15 lakh to an individual.

In his 2016 poll affidavit, Palaniswami's movable assets stood at over Rs 12.83 lakh and he had immovable assets worth Rs 1.97 crore.

He owed the government no dues, including on the income tax and GST fronts and stated agriculture as his profession in his affidavit submitted on Monday.

Kamal Haasan

Popular movie actor Kamal Haasan is contesting his first-ever election from the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency. The Times of India reported Kamal Haasan is the richest candidate so far in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, having assets valued at Rs 176.9 crore in total.

The News Minute reported, "Haasan has declared movable assets of over Rs 45 crore and immovable assets of a little over Rs 131 crore. In his affidavit, he said his income as per his tax returns for the year 2019-20 was Rs 22.1 crore."

"In terms of his movable assets, Kamal Haasan declared Rs 2.43 crore in bank deposits, Rs 26.1 lakh in investments such as mutual funds and shares, Rs 2.39 crore in insurance, Rs 36.24 crore in personal loans, and Rs 3.69 crore in vehicles—a BMW 730LD and Lexus Lx 570. Along with cash in hand, his movable assets comes to a little over Rs 45 crore. For immovable assets, he owns agricultural land that is currently worth Rs 17.79 crore, measuring a total of 35.59 acres. The market value of commercial buildings he owns, all of them in Chennai, is at Rs 92.05 crore. In terms of residential buildings, he has two properties in Chennai that are cumulatively currently worth Rs 19.5 crore. In addition, he is the joint owner of a property in London that is currently worth Rs 2.5 crore," The News Minute reported.

Kamal Haasan also stated he had liabilities of Rs 49.5 crore, due in loans for insurance and mortgage purposes and to individuals.

T.T.V. Dhinakaran

For a leader accused of corruption, the poll affidavit of T.T.V. Dhinakaran, chief of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), shows his assets have seen little growth. Dhinakaran filed his nomination from Kovilpatti constituency.

The Times of India reported, "His previous affidavit filed in the 2017 byelection to R K Nagar showed his asset value at Rs10.26 crore. It has gone up to Rs10.86 crore now. A major share of the movable and immovable assets are in his wife’s name. Dhinakaran owes Rs 28 crore to the government, apart from another Rs 51.34 crore to the government, which is in dispute.”
