Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) and TTV Dhinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) have sealed an alliance for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
As part of the seat sharing agreement, the AIMIM will contest in three seats—Vaniyambadi, Sankarapuram and Krishnagiri.
Earlier, Dhinakaran had said the AMMK's "only aim" was to keep the DMK away from power and for this purpose like-minded parties could join its bloc.
"Elections are nearing. Our only aim is to prevent the DMK from coming to power. I am taking efforts for that. It is not that this party should come or not .. we are ready to include (in AMMK-led alliance) all parties opposed to the DMK and willing to accept our leadership and face the polls," he had said.
Dhinakaran floated his party in 2017 after his aunt V.K. Sasikala was removed as the AIADMK chief following her conviction and four-year jail sentence in a corruption case. Sasikala, who was released from Bengaluru jail in February, has however announced that she would stay away active politics.
Dhnakaran had given a rude shock to the AIAMDK in 2017 when he won the byelections to RK Nagar constituency which fell vacant after the demise of former chief minister Jayalalithaa. In the 2019 Lok Sbaha elections, Dhinakaran's party gained 8.46 per cent vote share in the state.
Elections to 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will take place in a single phase on April 6.
