Superstar Rajinikanth's statements on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has drawn a sharp reaction from Congress leader Karti Chidambaram who accused the actor of parroting the script written by his puppeteers.
“As expected parrots the script written by his puppeteers,” Karti, son of former Union minister P. Chidambaram, said in a tweet.
“No reason for Rajinikanth to pretend that he is going to form a new political party, might as well join the BJP and spare us the charade,” he said in a second tweet.
This is the first time a senior leader from the Congress state unit has launched a scathing attack on the actor, though the party has been critical of his alleged soft approach towards the saffron party.
Earlier, throwing his weight behind the CAA, Rajinikanth asserted that the legislation did not pose any threat to Muslims while backing the National Population Register exercise as "very essential."
"A scare is created as if the CAA is a threat to Muslims. How it is a threat to Muslims ? CAA is no threat to Muslims, if they face trouble (due to the law), I will be the first person to raise voice for them," the actor said amid nation-wide protests against the Act.
Notably, the actor, who is expected to foray into politics has taken a stand contrary to that of his friend and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan, who has staunchly opposed the CAA.
