With infighting intensifying in the states where the Congress is in power, coupled with the threat posed by the BJP where its governments have a thin majority, party President Sonia Gandhi on Friday held meetings with chief ministers, general secretaries and PCC chiefs of the party-ruled states.

The series of meetings discussed the systems put in place to ensure effective coordination between the organisation and the governments, so as to ensure that working in tandem, all the programmes of the government and commitment of the party could be taken seamlessly to the people.

The achievements of the respective state governments, even in the face of "constant destabilising efforts" on the part of the BJP, were enumerated and discussed.

It was stressed in the meetings that in the prevailing "socio-economic and political crisis" in the country, the states ruled by the Congress are not only the standing safe sanctuaries of democracy, people centric governance and economic remonitisation, but also the strongest bulwark against the BJP.

Reviewing the details, Sonia emphasised on the need to put in place an effective systems for monitoring and implementation of the key manifesto commitments that the Congress had made in the run up to the Assembly Elections.

It was pointed out that apart from the constant "diabolic game of destabilisation" that the BJP plays, its government at the Centre also leaves no stones unturned to create roadblocks in the implementation of Central schemes and programme by the Congress-ruled states. The need of an effective strategy to deal with this problem that includes exposing the BJP in front of the people was underlined.

The Congress president also asked the respective state governments to assign duties on a regular basis to ministers on roster basis to sit in PCC offices to address public grievances.

Also present in the meetings were former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior leaders A.K. Antony, Ahmed Patel and K.C. Venugopal.
