Why #HappyBirthdayBeta trending on Twitter on Pak Independence Day

Indian Twitter users took to the micro-blogging site on Wednesday to troll Pakistan

As Pakistan celebrates its 73rd Independence Day on Wednesday, a strange hashtag is trending on Twitter.

With Pakistan announcing that they would observe India's Independence Day on August 15 as 'Kashmir Solidarity Day' in the wake of New Delhi abrogating special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370, Indian Twitter users took to the micro-blogging site on Wednesday to troll the neighbouring country.

With the social media site flooded with memes and trolls, the hashtag #HappyBirthdayBeta rocketed into the top five Twitter trends in the country.

Some high-profile personalities like Major Gaurav Arya (Retd) also tweeted using this hashtag.

India on August 5 scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Reacting to India's move, Pakistan downgraded bilateral ties and expelled New Delhi's envoy in Islamabad Ajay Bisaria, who returned last week. Pakistan has also decided to not send its newly appointed High Commissioner Moin-ul-Haque to India.

On Wednesday, addressing the Independence Day function in Islamabad, Pakistan President Arif Alvi said, "Kashmiris and Pakistanis are one people” and the country will continue to stand with the people of Kashmir.

India has, however, maintained its decision on Jammu and Kashmir was its internal affair and urged Islamabad to review its decision to downgrade the diplomatic ties.
