I've already given resignation, am no longer Congress chief: Rahul

Rahul demanded the CWC convene a meeting at the earliest to decide the next chief

In an indication that he is firm on stepping away from leadership of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi announced on Wednesday that he had “already submitted his resignation” and was no longer party president.

Rahul had first offered to resign on May 25 after the Congress party's drubbing in the recent general elections. Several senior leaders had appealed to him to reconsider. On Tuesday, hundreds of Congress activists staged a demonstration demanding Rahul remain party chief; one activist even attempted to climb a tree to commit suicide.

Rahul was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, “Party should decide on the new president quickly without further delay, I'm nowhere in this process. I have already submitted my resignation and I am no longer the party president.” Rahul also demanded the “CWC should convene a meeting at the earliest and decide.” Rahul was speaking to reporters outside Parliament.
