In her first public speech after assuming charge as Congress general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying she was saddened by what was happening in the country.

Addressing a party rally on Modi's home turf in Gujarat, Priyanka said, “I am saddened by what is happening in the country today... Our institutions are being attacked and hate is being spread everywhere.”

Priyanka said the Modi government did not fulfill its promises of providing jobs to crores of people in the country.

“Ask the person who made tall promises to you... where is the Rs 15 lakh they promised for every bank account. They had promised security for women. Ask those women, do they feel secure?” she said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present at the rally near Adalaj village of Gandhinagar district. The rally was held after the Congress Working Committee meeting in Ahmedabad earlier on Tuesday.

"Your awareness is a weapon, your vote is a weapon. You have to think before you vote. A lot of trivial issues will be brought up this election,” Priyanka said to a cheering crowd.

Priyanka was appointed Congress general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh East in January.
