According to media reports, Vajpayee will be hospitalised overnight.

Among others who visited the former prime minister at AIIMS were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP president Amit Shah and Health Minister J.P. Nadda.

PM Modi interacted with the family members of Vajpayee and spoke to doctors at the hospital about the latter's health. Modi was at AIIMS for about 50 minutes.

Congress leader P. Chidambaram wished Vajpayee well. "We pray for Shri Vajpayee ji's good health," he tweeted.

A statement from the saffron party had said the veteran leader was admitted for routine check-up.

The 93-year-old stalwart was the first-ever person from the BJP to have become the nation's prime minister.

Vajpayee served three terms as BJP—briefly in 1996, between 1998-1999 and from 1999 to 2004. Currently, he is the oldest living former prime minister. Vajpayee withdrew from active politics after the 2004 election loss and has been mostly confined to his home since 2009.

Vajpayee is also a renowned poet. His birthday, which falls on December 25, is celebrated as 'Good Governance Day' by the BJP.

In 2015, Vajpayee was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.
