Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted his election campaign in Karnataka on Tuesday as he addressed a massive rally of the Bharatiya Janata Party at Chamarajanagar in Mysuru.

Highlights of Modi's speech

  • People of Karnataka have pinned their hopes on BJP and Yeddyurappa
  • It's a BJP storm not wave in Keranataka; Even Delhi knows winds of change blowing in Karnataka
  • May 1 is celebrated as labour day across the nation, this is the day to celebrate those who build the nation
  • My govt has worked relentlessly to fulfill your dreams
  • I want to dedicate the historical achievement of the country on 28 April, when all villages in India were electrified, to the workers and labourers of the country on this Labour day; Leisang village in Manipur was the last village to be electrified in India
  • In 2005, Manmohan Singh had said he will provide electricity to every village by 2009. What happened to that? In any case, we saw how the Congress treated Manmohan Singh. They tore off ordinances and disrespected him
  • Before questioning us Rahul Gandhi should know that in 2005 Manmohan Singh had said that all villages will be electrified by 2009, and the same thing was said by Sonia Gandhi ji and you(Rahul ) mock the labourers and workers who made this (electrification) possible
  • I dare the Congress president to speak in Hindi, English or the mother tongue of his mother to deliver a speech in Karnataka for 15 minutes, without reading out from a piece of paper, on the achievements of the party government... people of Karnataka will draw their own conclusion
  • His speaking for 15 minutes will itself is a big thing. And when I hear that I would not be able to sit, I think...wow, what a scene it is? Congress president, Sir, we cannot sit before you. You are 'naamdar' (famous), while I am 'kaamdar' (ordinary worker). We have no status to sit in front of you.
  • On May 12,  you will have to vote for the future of Karnataka. You have to vote for the BJP to choose honesty over corruption
  • There is 2+1 formula which is being practiced in Karnataka, it is a version of the Congress's family politics in Karnataka
  • In Karnataka there is no law, there is no order. The Lokayukta is not safe, how can the common people be safe
  • Karnataka is not progressing due to unemployment and the state is not able to tap the tourism potential under the current government
  • It is the NDA government that is working to transform the lives of farmers. The farmers of Karnataka are benefitting from the various initiatives of the central government

Modi, who last visited Karnataka for campaigning in February, will be addressing ralliesin Udupi and Chikkodi in Belagavi later in the day. Ahead of his Udupi rally, Modi is scheduled to visit Udupi Sri Krishna Matha and meet the senior seer there.

At least a dozen rallies are expected to follow in the coming days, party sources said. Polling for the 224-member assembly will be held on May 12, and results will be declared on the 15th of the month.

'A wave of BJP'

Earlier talking at the Chamarajanagar rally, BJP's chief ministerial candidate B.S Yeddyurappa said the Congress would not win more than 50 seats in the upcoming elections. "There is a wave of BJP in the state, we will win more than 150 seats," he said and added that JD(S) would not win more than 25 seats.
