We live at an age when we prefer fast food to unhealthy eating options, considering the ease and stress one endures in their personal and professional lives.
Individuals are always at risk of falling prey to various serious conditions and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of them. As per a recent study, eating a diet rich in plant-based foods while reducing meat intake could significantly lower the risk of developing CKD.
The findings of the study underscore the role of diet in protecting kidney health, especially as kidney-related ailments continue to rise worldwide.

“The findings reinforce that multiple plant-forward diets support kidney health, with the EAT–Lancet diet serving as a structured, biologically supported option within this broader dietary framework," said Thomas M. Holland, physician-scientist and assistant professor at the RUSH Institute for Healthy Aging, RUSH University.
What is the EAT-Lancet diet?
As per Medical News Today, the EAT-Lancet diet consists largely of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and unsaturated oils, with a low to moderate amount of seafood and poultry. The diet includes little or no red meat, processed meat, added sugar, refined grains, and starchy vegetables.
As per the researchers who conducted the study, people who closely followed the diet had a lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease compared to those who consumed diets higher in meat.
"This protective association was particularly evident among individuals with low residential green space exposure and specific genetic variants," mentioned the study.
To conclude, these findings by experts support the adoption of planetary health diets in chronic kidney disease prevention and underscore the value of personalised nutrition strategies that incorporate genetic, environmental, and molecular profiling.
