After undergoing surgery for her ‘12 mm diameter appendix’, filmmaker Kiran Rao has shared a health update on Instagram for her followers.
"Here I was, all ready to party my way into 2026, when my appendix sent me a reminder to slow down, breathe deep, and give thanks (folded hands and bowing emojis). Immense gratitude for:- modern medicine (still can’t understand how that whole 12mm dia appendix came out through a 10.5mm catheter, thank god I’m not a doctor)," her social media post mentioned.
She also informed her well-wishers that she had been discharged after the surgery and was grateful for the timely intervention of her friends and family.
What is an appendix?
The appendix is a small, tube-shaped organ, about the size of a finger, that is attached to the large intestine. While it is still not clear about the purpose of the organ, it turns out to be serious when the appendix becomes inflamed.

As per the Cleveland Clinic, appendicitis is an inflamed appendix. It can cause sudden and intense pain in your lower abdomen.
What causes the inflammation?
A block in the lining of the appendix, which eventually leads to an infection, causing the organ to become inflamed.
It becomes serious when the inflammation causes the appendix to swell and burst. This results in the bacteria spreading to the abdominal cavity and can even enter the bloodstream, which can be life-threatening.
What are the symptoms?
The Mayo Clinic mentions the following as symptoms of appendicitis:
-Sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower belly
-Sudden pain that begins around the belly button and often shifts to the lower right belly
-Pain that worsens with coughing, walking or making other jarring movements
-Nausea and vomiting
-Loss of appetite
-Low-grade fever that may rise as the illness worsens
-Constipation or diarrhea
-Belly bloating
-Gas
