'My fingers were no longer working': Cricketer Tilak Varma discloses his struggle with Rhabdomyolysis

Cricketer Tilak Varma revealed his battle with rhabdomyolysis, a rare and life-threatening muscle breakdown condition, which struck him while preparing for the Test team

For the first time, cricketer Tilak Varma opened up about his struggles after being diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis and how he survived the turbulent times. 

"My whole body felt like a stone and I had to retire hurt. They had to cut my gloves off because my fingers wouldn't move," said Varma on Gaurav Kapur's chat show Breakfast With Champions.

"I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition which leads to muscle breakdown. It was a time when I was looking to make it to the Test team," he added. 

Varma explained how the extensive preparation was taking a toll on his body and neglecting a proper recovery resulted in a disastrous period after being diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. 

He thanked his Mumbai Indians team and Jay Shah for admitting him immediately, as a few more hours of delay could have been disastrous for him. 

What is Rhabdomyolysis?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, rhabdomyolysis is a rare muscle injury where the muscles break down. It is a life-threatening condition that can happen after an injury or excessive exercise without rest.

How is it caused?

This dangerous muscle condition can be caused by overexertion, trauma, medications or an underlying health condition. 

What are the symptoms?

Common signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis are weak muscles, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, and a change in the urine colour, mentioned Cleveland Clinic.
