After weeks of drama, Kollywood has at least one release to show for the Pongal season, even if it is arguably the lesser hyped of the two expected films. While Vijay's Jana Nayagan continues to be delayed indefinitely, Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi hit the theatres on Saturday (January 10) to a strong opening.
Amid the euphoria created by Vijay's farewell film Jana Nayagan, Parasakthi also managed to quietly generate solid buzz for itself, courtesy strong promos and the real-life premise of the film. Directed by Sudha Kongara, the political drama also features Ravi Mohan and Atharvaa in key roles.
It's not common for a film to release on Saturday but Parasakthi had announced January 10 as the date because Jana Nayagan was expected to release on January 9. Nevertheless, a Saturday release helps to boost the opening day numbers at the cost of a shorter weekend. Parasakthi is expecting tracked gross of close to Rs 8.50 crore in Tamil Nadu and a lot of walk-ins can also be expected.
As per early estimates, Parasakthi will easily go past Rs 10 crore in Tamil Nadu and it is expected to be around Rs 11-12 crore. Amaran is Sivakarthikeyan's biggest opener at Rs 15.70 crore in Tamil Nadu and that figure is unlikely to be breached. Parasakthi, though, has taken a very strong opening although the initial reports are mixed.
With the Vijay-starrer unlikely to release over the next 10 days, Parasakthi is expected to enjoy a good run during the Pongal holidays. There are a few Telugu Sankranthi releases but if the audience lap up Parasakthi, it should enjoy an uninterrupted run. For now, the first job of getting a strong opening day has been done by Sivakarthikeyan and co.
