'KPop Demon Hunters' sequel in the works? Makers of Netflix's 'most-watched' film have more stories to tell

Netflix's vibrant animated musical fantasy has become an instant hit on streaming and limited theatrical screenings, becoming a major hit with kids and teenagers since its June release

After the success of Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters two months after its premiere, and the two-day karaoke-accompanied 'Sing Alone' theatrical event, the makers are reportedly discussing plans to make further instalments. The streamer claims that it has now become their "most-watched" film so far.

A colourful animated musical fantasy, KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, has become a hit with kids and teenagers since its release on June 20. A month later, Netflix claimed that it's their "most-watched original animated film of all time". In the second week of August, the film reportedly became the "second most-popular" English-language film on the platform.

These claims shouldn’t be hard to believe for adults who first heard about this show from their colleagues whose kids have been talking about it at home and in classrooms. The parents wouldn't have seen it, especially those who are averse to any kind of animation — the ones who dismiss even adult animated films as "just another cartoon." But this is a different generation we are talking about. Moreover, the film's soundtrack is a hit, too, topping the Billboard charts.

In an interview with Variety, Kang shared the possibility of a sequel. "We've set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there's a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there's only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes. This was Rumi's story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn't the movie for those stories," she said.

About ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

The film revolves around a trio of K-pop stars, Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), called Huntrix, blessed with alternate 'superhero' identities as demon hunters working to thwart any supernatural threat that puts the lives of their fans in danger, with the help of their music. The film's central plot revolves around the Huntrix fighting a battle against a rival boy band comprising demons in disguise.
