Abrams, known for his work in the shows 'Felicity', 'Alias' and 'Lost', is a writer on the eight-episode series he co-created with LaToya Morgan

Filmmaker JJ Abrams (Star Trek, Mission Impossible III) is returning to long-form storytelling with a retro crime thriller series set in the 1970s. Titled Duster, the show is headlined by Josh Holloway, one of the main leads of Abrams' hit sci-fi series Lost.

Streaming is slated for May 15, on MAX (and possibly on JioHotstar in India), with each episode of the eight-episode series slated for weekly release instead of being dropped in one go.

The story has Holloway playing Jim, a getaway driver in the US Southwest crossing paths with some unsavoury characters and a woman who plays the "FBI's first black female agent" (Rachel Hilson). The latter, who is investigating the crime syndicate Jim works for, eventually teams up with him to take down a common enemy.

The first teaser released by HBO promises a stylish and fun action thriller reminiscent of movies like Drive and The Nice Guys.

Interestingly, veteran actor Keith David, known for his appearances in The Nice Guys, The Thing, and Requiem for a Dream, is playing a menacing gangster.

Co-created by Abrams and showrunner LaToya Morgan (Into the Badlands), Duster also features Camille Guaty (Prison Break), Benjamin Charles Watson (Designated Survivor), and Asivak Koostachin (Red Snow).

In the television space, JJ Abrams previously created the TV series Felicity, followed by the espionage thriller Alias, the sci-fi mystery Lost, and the sci-fi procedural Fringe.

He was also involved as an executive producer on shows like Person of Interest, Lovecraft Country, and Presumed Innocent. He recently served as one of the producers of three Mission Impossible films — Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout.
