Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho and his writing collaborator Choi Gyu-seok (Hellbound, Awl) have teamed up with acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron to bring out a new Netflix supernatural thriller titled Revelations, starring Ryu Jun-yeol, Shin Hyun-been, and Shin Min-jae.
The film is based on Choi Gyu-seok's 2022 comic of the same name. As per Netflix's official logline, the adaptation revolves around a "pastor who believes it’s his divine calling to punish the culprit behind a missing-person case, while the detective assigned to the case continues to be haunted by visions of her dead sister."
In a chat with Netflix, Gyu-seok said, “Director Yeon Sang-ho suggested creating a story about faith and beliefs, the themes that have interested him for a long time. I was intrigued and thought that we could come up with a fascinating story.”
Gyu-seok recalls being compelled to collaborate with Sang-ho after seeing his work in the dark animated film King of Pigs and, later, his live-action zombie blockbuster Train to Busan.
Speaking about his vision for the film, Sang-ho shared that unlike some of his recent work, Revelations has steered clear of fantasy elements, focusing instead on "psychological elements that can be found in reality, such as illusions, delusions, and traumas.”
“The story centers on the character psychologies of [Pastor] Sung Min-chan and [Detective] Lee Yeon-hui, who resemble one another, but make very different choices,” he said. “I wanted to create a story about a lead character with egocentric views, someone who sees and believes only what he wants to. I was thinking of such a character through whom I could create a story within the genre, and Sung Min-chan, a pastor of a new church, was born.”
On his involvement, Cuarón (Children of Men, Gravity) told Netflix he was driven by the urge to back a film that "speaks about a very specific social context that is translated through the world because we have a shared humanity.”
