The promos and stills of the upcoming Indian Netflix series Dabba Cartel have piqued viewers' curiosity on account of its top-notch cast members led by Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, and Shalini Pandey.
The show, created by Shibani Akhtar, Vishnu Menon, Gaurav Kapur, and Akanksha Seda, is written by Vishnu Menon and Bhavna Kher, and directed by Hitesh Bhatia.
The cast also features Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Lillete Dubey, and Bhupendra Singh Jadawat.
So, what's Dabba Cartel about? The story circles intertwining lives involving men and women whose career choices lead to unforeseen complications and subsequent improvisations concerning a pharma investigation and a dabba delivery business becoming a front for drug peddling.
In a statement, Farhan Akhtar, who is co-producing the series with frequent collaborator Ritesh Sidhwani through their Excel Media and Entertainment LLP, calls Dabba Cartel an "exciting" project.
"This series is a dramatic tale of five everyday middle-class women reluctantly starting a drug cartel that ends up colliding with a massive pharma scandal that is under investigation. At Excel, we always try to tell stories that push creative boundaries, and Dabba Cartel is a perfect reflection of that vision,” he said.
The long-form storytelling format is not a new medium for Shabana Azmi, who has previously acted in shows like The Empire and the American series Halo based on the popular video game of the same name.
However, the web series space is a first for Jyothika. Nimisha Sajayan (The Great Indian Kitchen) recently starred in the Prime Video series Poacher.
