Indian cinema's global outreach is limited, says 'Barfi' director Anurag Basu

Citing the similarities that the Indian film industry and the Korean film industry share, Basu feels that our cinema caters to the Indian diaspora and Indian audience more

Filmmaker Anurag Basu thinks Indian cinema needs to up its game if it hopes to get more noticed by the global audience, drawing comparisons to the Korean film industry with regard to the respective industries' global outreach.

While interacting with ANI, the Life in a Metro, Ludo and Jagga Jasoos maker feels that our cinema has a long way to go despite having considerable international attention.

"I think world cinema is noticing our films. But I think we have a long way to go because mainstream cinema still caters to the Indian diaspora and Indian audience. We still are far behind in getting a global audience. We only get an Indian audience globally. I think it is a long way to go," he said.

Bringing up the Korean cinema comparison, Basu observes that though the Indian film industry is "as young as" the Korean film industry, the notable difference is that they have a "global audience" and that Indian filmmakers only cater to the Indian audience. "People see their (Korean) movies, we see their movies. Our movies are only seen by Indians. And only a handful of people who are passionate about cinema. We don't cater globally. We only care about Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weekend, 100 crore, 500 crore, bas vahi tak (till here only)."

On the work front, Basu is working on the pre-production of Aashiqui 3, with Kartik Aaryan. He updated that the team will go into production next month.

Basu also has plans to mount a sequel to Life in a Metro, titled Metro in Dino, an anthology project for which he is assembling Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma.
