Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha, who was recently seen in the movie Double XL, which is about body positivity and a critique of beauty standards imposed by society, revealed that there was a time when her mother used to constantly tell her to lose weight.
The actor, who had put on 15kgs for the movie, said in an interview to Firstpost that she was always an overweight kid and faced much name-calling in her school days.
She said through her film Double XL, she and the makers want to convey the message that it is never okay to tell anyone they are not good enough based on their size, colour, or height. "Everybody has dreams and has the right to dream. It will just be a better world if we are kinder to people and help them achieving their dreams rather than pulling them down," she was quoted as saying.
Speaking about how body-shaming begins at home, the actor said she remembers her mother telling her constantly to lose weight.
"When somebody was constantly saying that to you, the rebellious kid in me would always do the opposite and the day my mother stopped telling me that’s when it actually struck me that I need to do something about my weight," the actor said.
She said she doesn't blame the mothers who tell their daughters to lose weight as it is possible that they themselves were told by their mothers to lose weight when they were young.
