Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has stayed in the news recently with him and the Aadujeevitham team returning from Jordan after being stranded there for two months amid the global lockdown. On Monday, Prithviraj took to social media to announce his next Malayalam film—Vaariyamkunnan.

The period drama directed by Aashiq Abu will chronicle the legacy of Malabar revolution leader Vaariyan Kunnath Kunjahmmed Haji. Kunjahmmed Haji was the face of the 1921 Malabar Rebellion waged against the British Rule.

Prithviraj said that the filming of the project will begin in 2021, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Malabar Rebellion.

Announcing the project, Prithviraj wrote: “He stood up against an empire that ruled a quarter of the world. Etched out his own country with an army that waged a never before war against the British. Though history was burned and buried, the legend lived on! The legend of a leader, a soldier, a patriot. A film on the man who became the face of the 1921 Malabar revolution. #Vaariyamkunnan. Filming begins in 2021. On the 100th anniversary.”

Muhsin Parari who wrote Sudani from Nigeria, will co-direct the movie.

Vaariyamkunnan will be produced by Zikander and Moideen, with screenplay by Harshad and Rameez.
