Singer Daler Mehndi joined the BJP on Friday, just days after singer Hans Raj Hans and actor Sunny Deol were declared BJP candidates from northwest Delhi and Gurdaspur respectively. Daler Mehndi had joined the Congress in 2013 before the Delhi assembly elections.

In 2008, a court in Patiala had convicted Mehndi in a 2003 human trafficking case. He was sentenced to two years and later granted bail. The police said that Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Mehndi had taken two performance groups to the US in 1998 and 1999. The police claimed they 'dropped off' 10 group members illegally.
