Venom: First official full-length trailer is finally out

“You should be extremely afraid.”

Venom fans were certainly afraid for the fate of the movie since Venom’s teaser-trailer released earlier this year, was decidedly underwhelming. The dark symbiote made no appearance in the trailer, though that was perhaps because post-production work on the CGI-heavy film was yet to be completed.

But the new Venom trailer changes things.

The theme of the trailer is darker and its pace is noticeably faster. From the looks of it, Venom likely has a standard origin-story plot, but with the main character being an anti-hero, things ought to be more interesting. One thing Venom fans can rejoice about is the introduction of the personality conflict between the symbiote and its host, which is evident in the trailer. Unlike the Toby McGuire’s Spiderman 3 rendition, this Venom seems to have more of a distinctive personality.

Tom Hardy with his heavy accent does a surprisingly good job of portraying an investigative journalist thus far. How his earnest personality struggles with the menacing Venom and how they manage to strike a balance will be interesting to watch.

Apart from this, the Venom trailer is quite the comprehensive package—the antagonist is given ample introduction, there is plenty of action, and the love interest is featured as well. The only issue with the trailer is that it has disconcertingly fast cuts at certain points. So you may want to re-watch the trailer a couple of times; it seems to get better with every repetition.

The clincher comes towards the end of the nearly three-minute-long trailer, when for the first time the most iconic Spiderman villain is revealed in all its true glory. “We…are Venom,” it growls unnervingly, the screen goes blank and only a scream can be heard. It seems that Sony Pictures has learned much from Marvel Studios.

The Venom trailer has been largely well-received online and has certainly rekindled our hope in the upcoming release. This franchise is reportedly not based in the same cinematic universe as Tom Holland’s Spiderman, and will follow a completely different tangent.

Venom hits the theatres on October 5.
