At the recently concluded Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX), Turkish defense electronics firm Aselsan unveiled an upgraded version of its KGK-84 wing and guidance kit.

KGK-84 converts 2000 lb. class free-fall general purpose bombs (MK-84, MK-84-T, NEB ve NEB-T) to smart, precision-guided munitions. The kit deploys foldable wings for extended glide range exceeding 100 km when released from high-altitude fighters like 40,000 ft, with a minimum drop altitude of 10,000 ft and CEP (circular error probable) under 10 meters.

While it promises a range of 100 km, reports suggest that KGK-84 may not have reached the 100 kg range mark as Aselsan has, at the event, showcased an upgraded version of KGK-84.

Reports indicate that the upgraded version has been tested on F-16 fighters operated by Turkey.

According to EDR On-Line, Aselsan may be planning to test it on the multirole combat aircraft JF-17, jointly developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation of China and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, as well. However, there is no confirmed acquisition or integration of KGK-84 by Pakistan.

Aselsan has reportedly been trying to increase the range of the kitted free-fall bomb, and the wing kit may have already been modified. According to the company, the fire and forget KGK-84 is resistant to jamming threats, but EDR On-Line suggests that, taking a cue from the Russia-Ukraine war, where GNSS jamming and spoofing were major concerns, Aselsan is incorporating new technologies to counter such threats.
