WATCH: US Navy EA-18G Growler attack jet crashes into San Diego Bay

Boeing EA-18G Growler of the Electronic Attack Squadron 135 of the US Navy crashed into San Diego Bay

An EA-18G Growler electronic attack jet of the US Navy crashed into San Diego Bay on Wednesday, barely weeks after a US Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with a passenger jet in Washington.

Boeing EA-18G Growler is a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft, designed to disrupt, deceive, or deny a broad range of military electronic systems, including radars and communications. According to the US Navy, the EA-18G Growler aircraft is its " first line of defense in hostile environments" as it is equipped with a vast array of sensors and weapons providing the warfighter with a "lethal and survivable weapon system to counter current and emerging threats."

According to media reports, the incident happened during a training exercise.

A US official said two pilots, who were in the two-seater jet, were rescued and were taken to a nearby hospital. The reason for the crash is yet to be known.

The aircraft reportedly is still in the water.

An unverified CCTV footage showed the aircraft descending at a very steep angle.

The WarZone reported that the aircraft belongs to Electronic Attack Squadron 135 (VAQ-135), known as the 'Black Ravens' stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Another EA-18G Growler was involved in a fatal crash near Mount Rainier, Washington in October. This too happened during a training exercise.
