Barely a day after IndiGo announced its entry into the Scandinavian region with direct flights from Mumbai to Copenhagen, India’s aviation regulator slapped a Rs 20 lakh fine on the carrier over alleged deficiencies in its pilot training practices.

According to a regulatory filing, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) informed IndiGo about the fine on September 26.

The penalty is specifically related to the “alleged failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes,” which are airports known for their complex operational conditions and challenging approaches.

IndiGo stated in its exchange filing that it is currently contesting the regulator’s order before the appropriate appellate authority.

The airline added that the delay in disclosing the DGCA’s penalty was unintentional, attributed to a lag in internal communication about the order’s details.

The company further clarified that this action from the DGCA does not have any material impact on its financials, operations, or other activities.

Meanwhile, shares of IndiGo were trading in the green on Thursday, closing 1.52 per cent higher at Rs 5,720.50 on the NSE.

IndiGo begins Mumbai-Copenhagen flights

IndiGo on Wednesday launched direct flights from Mumbai to Copenhagen, the airline’s 44th international and 138th overall destination.

Services on this route will operate three times each week, using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways, it said.

This latest addition follows recent launches to Amsterdam and Manchester from Mumbai, as IndiGo continues to expand its international reach.

Further plans include new flights to London and Athens in the coming months, according to the carrier. IndiGo currently runs a fleet of over 400 planes and operates approximately 2,200 flights daily.
