In its first decision in 2025, the Union cabinet on Wednesday approved the extension of the One-time Special Package on Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) beyond the NBS subsidy from January 1 until further orders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision and said his government was fully committed to furthering the welfare of farmers.

"We are proud of all our farmer sisters and brothers who work hard to feed our nation. The first Cabinet of 2025 is dedicated to enhancing prosperity for our farmers. I am glad that key decisions have been taken in this regard," he said in a post on X.

Modi further claimed that extending the one-time special package on Di-Ammonium Phosphate will help farmers by ensuring DAP at affordable prices.

With the extension of the scheme, the Special package on DAP at Rs 3,500 per MT will be provided from January 1 till further orders over and above the approved NBS subsidy to ensure smooth availability of DAP fertilizer to the farmers at an affordable price, said an official statement.

The tentative budgetary requirement for the move would be approximately Rs. 3,850 crore, it said.

In July 2024, the cabinet approved a one-time Special Package on DAP beyond the NBS subsidy at Rs 3,500 per MT from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, with an approximate financial implication of Rs 2,625 crore.

With the new extension, the total amount of special package approved for DAP since April 2024 would be more than Rs. 6,475 crore, the government said.
