Beed, May 16 (PTI) Two girls drowned after the paddle boat they were on overturned in a lake in Maharashtra’s Beed district on Saturday, police said.
The incident occurred around noon at Hingani lake in Dharur tehsil, they said.
According to the police, a woman and six girls from a fishing community arrived at the water body around 11 am.
While four were busy fishing, three girls, Palak Shyam Parve (14), Divya Vikas Kamble (9) and Mohini Bhima Parve (16), were sitting on a paddle boat. “All of a sudden, the boat overturned, throwing the girls into the water,” an official said.
Locals rushed to help the girls. The three minors and one Maya Shinde (30), who had entered the water to rescue the girls but became unconscious, were first taken to the Primary Health Centre at Mohkhed and later referred to Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College and Hospital at Ambajogai.
However, doctors declared Palak and Divya dead on arrival.
Maya Shinde remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment, while Mohini is reported to be recovering after being shifted to a private hospital in Dindrud, said officials.
After the post-mortem at Ambajogai, the bodies of the two girls were handed over to their families, they added.
