Patiala, May 1 (PTI) A "Jal Chetna" workshop highlighting water conservation and environmental awareness was organised at the School of Eminence, Pheel Khana in Punjab's Patiala.
The programme was conducted by the IJ Doda Foundation, led by Jonita Doda, in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change Punjab, under environmental compensation funds, a release said here on Friday.
Experts at the workshop raised concerns over water pollution, conservation and rapid groundwater depletion in Punjab, noting that over 75 per cent of the state's blocks are categorised as over-exploited.
They also referred to earlier warnings by NITI Aayog about severe water stress in several Indian cities.
Students, teachers and eco-club members participated in interactive sessions with experts on sustainable water practices.
Addressing the gathering, Jonita Doda cautioned about the impact of the El Nino, saying changing climate patterns could aggravate water scarcity.
She cited forecasts by the India Meteorological Department indicating possible El Nino conditions, often linked to weaker monsoons and reduced rainfall.
She said water conservation is now a necessity and the initiative aims to encourage students to adopt responsible habits.
The District Education Office, Patiala, coordinated the event.
