Thane, Apr 22 (PTI) The Thane Municipal Corporation has imposed restrictions on washing of vehicles at service centres across the city till June 10 in view of declining water levels amid rising temperatures, officials said on Wednesday.
Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao appealed to residents to use water judiciously and cooperate with the administration to avoid a potential shortage, an official release stated.
According to the civic body, water stocks in dams supplying the city have been steadily falling due to intense heat, while groundwater levels in wells and borewells have also dropped.
As part of water conservation measures, washing and cleaning of two, three and four-wheelers and other vehicles at service centres have been temporarily prohibited, officials said.
Rao has directed authorities to initiate punitive action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act against violators.
The administration has also advised commercial establishments to avoid unnecessary use of water, adopt recycling practices and strictly adhere to conservation norms.
Residents have also been urged to curb wastage at home by avoiding practices such as washing vehicles with potable water, cleaning courtyards excessively and leaving taps running.
