New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI) The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, will feature on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum (East) in London, the institute’s co-founder Gitanjali J Angmo said on Sunday.
Angmo, who is currently in London, shared on X that the museum will showcase innovations by her husband and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, including the ‘Ice Stupa’ water conservation technique and passive solar-heated rammed earth buildings designed as carbon-negative, energy-positive housing solutions.
The master plan of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), envisioned as a ‘University of the Future’, along with its educational philosophy, will also be part of the display, she said.
According to Angmo, the philosophy, developed as part of her doctoral research, has been presented through a wooden infographic illustrating the five pillars of future education.
A short film of about three-and-a-half minutes explaining HIAL's approach to learning will accompany the exhibits, she said, thanking the patrons, board members, faculty and students of the institute for their contributions.
Angmo also expressed gratitude to Chetsang Rinpoche, the institute's patron, and the curators of the museum for facilitating the showcase.
HIAL, founded in 2017 near Leh, promotes experiential and place-based learning tailored to mountain ecosystems.
Angmo’s announcement comes amid recent scrutiny of HIAL and other entities linked to Wangchuk.
The authorities have initiated inquiries into alleged financial and regulatory irregularities, which supporters of the activist have termed “unfounded” and “politically motivated”.
Wangchuk, known for his work on sustainable technologies in high-altitude regions, was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests in Ladakh over the demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the Union territory last September.
He was released on March 14 from Jodhpur Central Jail after 170 days.
