Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the newly built Pamban Bridge at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on April 6.

This 2.08 km-long engineering marvel is India's first vertical lift sea bridge.

The project was announced in 2019 by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, and completed in 2024 at a cost of Rs 550 crores.

The new bridge will replace the original cantilever Pamban Bridge, built more than a century ago, that suffered from corrosion and was closed down in 2022.

The new bridge can accommodate two train tracks and also promises durability, better navigation, less maintenance and better trade opportunities with the mainland.

Sunday's ceremony coincides with Ram Navami, adding a spiritual significance to the PM's visit.

Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin, Governor R.N. Ravi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and state legislators will attend the event.

PM Modi is also expected to announce an investment of Rs 8,300 crores towards various rail and road projects.
