JUNG TAE-SUK, a short-tempered but honest detective, traces a series of murders to an individual, despite the absence of forensic evidence. However, as the police department is short-staffed, the authorities are dismissive of his theory that there is a serial killer at large. When Jang Dong-soo, a vicious gangster, narrowly survives an attack by the killer, Tae-suk finds an unlikely accomplice in him.
While the cop wants to bring the killer to justice, the gangster wants retributive justice. Dong-soo also wants to restore his reputation as an undisputed criminal overlord. The two men embark on an exhilarating hunt for the murderer, even as he continues his killing spree. Meanwhile, a new unit takes over the investigation, adding to Tae-suk’s frustrations. What follows is a predictable but captivating chase thriller with an intriguing climax.
Directed by Lee Won-tae, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, which was screened out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, will soon be adapted into a Hollywood film. The dimly-lit streets and the relentless rain in the action sequences are reminiscent of another serial killer film—SE7EN. If you are a fan of thrillers, this one is sure to entertain you.
