The FBI, on Monday, arrested two men on charges that they helped establish a secret police station in New York City on behalf of the Chinese government, and about three dozen officers with China's national police force were charged with using social media to harass dissidents inside the United States, authorities said Monday.
Lu Jianwang, 61, and Chen Jinping, 59, both New York residents face charges of obstruction of justice and conspiring to act as agents for China. They were charged with using social media to track down and harass dissidents in the US. They are expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn on Monday, the BBC reported.
The duo was arrested for establishing the first overseas police station in the United States on behalf of China's Ministry of Public Security.
According to the US Department of Justice, the outpost was closed in the autumn of 2022, after they got wind of an FBI investigation into the station.
"This prosecution reveals the Chinese government's flagrant violation of our nation's sovereignty by establishing a secret police station in the middle of New York City," said Breon Pearce, the top prosecutor in Brooklyn told BBC.
