At least 56 civilians killed amid army, paramilitary clashes in Sudan

A day after the fight broke out between Sudan's military and a government paramilitary force, a total of 56 civilians were killed and several injured in the clashes across Sudan.

According to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, 595 others were wounded in the clashes.

On Saturday, the clashes that erupted between the army and paramilitary forces gripped panic and fear in the communities. The fighting continued overnight in the capital, Khartoum, were gunfires were dodged as the rival forces battled over the presidential palace.

Both the army and its opponents, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), claimed control of the airport and other key sites in Khartoum.

Gunshots were heard by eyewitnesses in Red Sea city of Port Sudan. Heavy artillery was heard in Omdurman, which adjoins Khartoum, and nearby Bahri in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Since the coup in 2021, generals have been running Sudan.

The fighting that erupt between the army units loyal to the de facto leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Sudan's deputy leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo also known as Hemedti, reported BBC.

Gen Dagalo said that his troops would keep fighting until all army bases were captured.

Panic gripped

The clashes have left many including the Indians reeling under panic and fear. People were asked to stay indoors by the state officials. Indian Embassy in Sudan tweeted an advisory asking Indian citizens to stay indoors.

According to media reports, there was no electricity in Khartoum with the ongoing battle.

The US, UK and the EU has intervened and asked the authorities to stop the fighting. Even the Russian embassy was concerned with the escalation of the violence.

The RSF on Saturday had claimed that at least three airports, the army's chief residence, and the presidential palace was under its control. However it was denied by Gen Burhan. RSF also said that one of its camps in south of Khartoum was attacked as well.
