The Taliban on Thursday arrested five women for conducting protests against its recently announced ban against women from attending universities.

According to reports, the arrests were made in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan. Three journalists were also arrested. The new policy came into immediate effect on Tuesday, restricting women from entering Universities.

Public and private universities were ordered to bar women from attending classes as the new ban came into effect. Girls have already been excluded from secondary schools by the Taliban.

The education ministry said its scholars had evaluated the university curriculum and environment, and attendance for girls would be suspended "until a suitable environment" was provided, BBC reported.

Prior to the ban, universities already had discriminatory rules against women in place, since the Taliban took over. Universities had gender-segregated entrances and classrooms, and female students could only be taught by women professors or old men, BBC reported.
