On Wednesday, R Ashwin announced that he is officially ending his IPL chapter today.

The former off-spinner took to X to announce his retirement, where he wrote, “They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.“

In the post, he thanked all the franchises for the memories and relationships. He also thanked the IPL and BCCI. He said that he is looking forward to what's coming next.

Ashwin retired from International cricket last year.

He first got into IPL with CSK in 2009. In 2010 and 2011 the team won back to back.

Over the last 18 years, he has represented five franchises in the game, including CSK, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. He returned to CSK in 2025. He has played a total of 221 matches in the IPL where he took 187 wicket at an economy of 7.20. He also scored 833 runs, including a half-century.

The 38-year-old will now be able to play in foreign franchise leagues similar to how Dinesh karthik who retired in June 2024 and went on to deature in the SA20. The BCCI however does not allow any current Indian players to feature in overseas leagues. Ashwin will have to also step away from the Tamil Nadu premier league to be able to play overseas.
