Paradip Port in Odisha has set a new national benchmark, becoming the fastest Indian port to handle 100 million tonnes (MMT) of cargo in a single financial year.
The major port reached 100.15MMT of cargo on November 27, 2025, announced Paradip Port Authority (PPA), as it sailed past this milestone in just 241 days, a full 12 days earlier than last year.
This is also the ninth consecutive year the port has crossed the 100MMT mark, doubling down on its position as one of India’s busiest maritime gateways.
Year-on-year, the port’s throughput at the 100MMT milestone has risen by 4.78 per cent on operational efficiency and sustained demand.
Coal remained the backbone of Paradip’s cargo mix, accounting for roughly 45 per cent of total volumes, jumping by 3.76 per cent versus the same period last year.
But diversification has always been Paradip Port’s strength, shedding its traditional image of a bulk port. Container cargo was up 32 per cent, gypsum and flux volumes jumped 24 per cent, steel cargo rose by 35 per cent, and petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) traffic expanded by 31 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
PPA Chairman P.L. Haranadh, as he celebrated the latest achievement, credited it to faster operations, system improvements, and support from industry and government. He thanked Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, noting that it was under the cabinet minister’s “inspiration, dynamic leadership and guidance” that PPA could reach this “incredible success”.
Haranadh also congratulated port officers, employees, user industries, stevedores, trade unions and public-private partners, and acknowledged the role of agencies such as the Government of Odisha, Indian Railways and Customs in enabling smooth cargo movement.
“With a clear focus on efficiency and growth, PPA is on track to target an all-time high in this fiscal,” the port authority further noted.
The latest achievement is another one to PPA’s growing prize cabinet. Around 10 days ago, Paradip Port won the “Major Port of the Year – Outstanding Bulk Cargo Performance & Committed to Excellence” title in the International Samudra Manthan Awards 2025 at Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai.
