The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, has alleged that one of its offices in the Pettavaythalai area of the Tiruchirapalli district was "set on fire".
The office falls under the Srirangam Assembly constituency, whose candidate from the TVK is S. Ramesh, a media coordinator for the party.
It also comes just days ahead of vote counting on May 4.
A probe is now underway into the incident after a formal complaint was lodged at the local police station by the party’s union secretary, seeking immediate action against those responsible.
"Will the vote counting in the Srirangam Assembly constituency take place in a secure environment? My election office ... was set ablaze by unidentified persons early this morning and has been completely destroyed. All banners placed there were also torn down," Ramesh said, as per a Times of India report.
Visuals from the scene after the fire was put out also show a number of posters of Vijay ripped to shreds, in addition to some debris on the ground.
The TVK has alleged that voter lists, campaign material, documents, banners and daily operational equipment were all destroyed in the blaze, which took place in the early hours of Friday.
CCTV footage from the scene showed two unidentified men—one walking away from the TVK office and the other on a motorcycle. The two men were then seen droving off on that motorcycle.
The party also hinted that the masked men seen setting the office ablaze in CCTV footage may be party workers from the DMK, adding that the party had received provocations from the DMK before.
