Several members of the Indian Youth Congress were detained after they staged a shirtless protest at the venue of the India AI summit on Friday.
Delhi police said that about 10 people were detained from Bharat Mandapam in relation to the incident.
Authorities are also trying to determine if the individuals entered the venue with a valid pass or QR code.
Workers who were part of the protest shouted slogans against PM Modi and took off their shirts after they entered hall number 5 of the summit venue, police said.
The demonstrations were held against the interim trade agreement between India and the US. Party leaders accused the prime minister of being "compromised" and alleged that the government had “traded the identity of the country" at the AI summit.
Police said that the protesters did not carry any party flags or visible symbols indicating political affiliation. However one of the detained individuals claimed to be associated with the IYC.
In a post on X the IYC wrote, "When bias, corporate pressure, and silence dominate foreign policy... then it's clear PM Modi is compromised!"
Sources from ANI indicated that legal action is being taken against those involved. The individuals were taken to Tilak Marg police station for questioning. A senior official said that all necessary legal steps will be taken against those involved.
The BJP strongly criticised the Youth Congress protest and called it disruptive and anti-national.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged that the protests were “carried out on instructions of Rahul Gandhi” and demanded an apology from the party.
“Shame on Congress Party… they storm the international AI Summit! Anti-India Congress! Congress behaves like Urban Naxals,” Bhandari said.
Security has been tightened following the incident, and additional personnel were deployed.
