A 65-year-old retired ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) employee, who allegedly strangled his wife to death with a towel at their residence on Wednesday in Bengaluru, told the police that he killed his wife because he was worried there was nobody to take care of her after his death.
The accused, Nageshwar Rao, was reportedly undergoing depression. The police had said that he wanted to end his life after killing Sandya Sri.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the accused told the police, “If I die, who will take care of her? We have no relatives here. I did not want her to suffer alone.”
The incident was reported at around 11 am within the Avalahalli police station limits in Bengaluru.
After the alleged attack on his wife, he remained at the spot and contacted an acquaintance, who alerted the police. The acquaintance had initially thought it was a joke.
"He was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression and was distressed. He allegedly intended to take his life after the incident, which is why he attacked his wife. There appear to be no other major reasons," said Saidulu Adavath, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield), reports news agency PTI.
"During questioning, he did not provide coherent responses. He appears to be mentally disturbed,” HT quoted Ramesh Banoth, Joint Commissioner of Police for the East Division, as saying.
