Had C.J. Roy already planned his suicide? Diary entry apologises to family; tells them how to run the company

Chairman of Confident Group, C.J. Roy had had written down information about foreign venture setbacks and instructions for his family on how to run the company in a diary entry before his death by suicide

Confident Group Chairman C.J. Roy, who died by suicide, had information akin to a suicide note in one of his last diary entries. In the note, he wrote that he had faced some setbacks from foreign ventures and apologised to his family, according to information obtained by Manorama Online.

Roy had written down information about those who owed money to the company and instructions on how to run it. He also stated in the entry that the company’s long-time investors should be protected and not cheated.

The note, which was handed over to his family members, was about 9 pages long.

Authorities suspect that C.J. Roy had already planned to die by suicide due to the note and a call he made to his brother on January 31, after he reportedly made the decision.

Allegations have been levelled against Income Tax Department officials who allegedly put Roy under severe pressure. The officials have been summoned again for questioning.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has now sought a judicial inquiry into Roy’s death. The CM said that the incident was a "blot on the tax administration of the country" in a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and pointed to serious lapses in search procedures.

"While being in complete agreement that tax evasion is a serious problem and every effort has to be taken to curb it, no action leading to loss of a precious human life can be justified in a civilised democratic society," the CM said. He said that an impartial inquiry is essential and that the best option would be to order a judicial inquiry by an incumbent or retired judge.
