TVK chief Vijay's father S.A. Chandrashekar on Thursday said the actor's political party is mulling to back the Congress in the assembly elections later this year.

"The Congress has a history and a legacy Vijay is ready to give them support and get them back to their old glory… Congress fought for independence and is a party that is now declining," he said.

"They have been giving support to other parties and are declining day by day. Vijay is ready to support them and get them back to their old glory. It is up to Congress to take this opportunity," he added.

Chandrashekar pointed out that many advised Vijay to contest the assembly polls alone as he is sure to win if he contests without alliance.

However, the Congress was not impressed by TVK's offer. Rejecting the idea of an alliance, TNCC chief K. Selvaperunthagai said the party is getting all the "boost" it requires from Rahul Gandhi.

"Look at our cadres, you will notice that they have had the boost already," he said, "Our leader Rahul Gandhi is giving us boost, horlicks and bournvita that we need. Nevertheless, I thank him for the offer."

This comes as Vijay lashed out at major political parties in Tamil Nadu. Strongly criticising the DMK, he called it the TVK's political enemy. He dismissed the AIADMK as a corrupt party and slammed the BJP, labelling it his ideological enemy.
