Mumbai train murder: One held by police 12 hours after college professor was stabbed to death at Malad station

Mumbai GRP swiftly arrested the 27-year-old, who was accused of fatally stabbing a college professor at Malad station after a brief dispute inside the train

Government Railway Police in Mumbai tracked and apprehended a 27-year-old daily wage worker in relation to the stabbing and murder of college professor Alok Kumar Singh inside a local train at Malad railway station on Sunday. The arrest was made just 12 hours after the murder.

Investigators tracked the accused, Omkar Eknath Shinde, at the Kurar area of Mumbai’s western suburbs using CCTV footage from Malad and preceding stations.

Shinde is employed in a metal polishing job.

The accused, Shinde, 27, had gotten into a minor dispute with professor Singh, 33, inside a Borivali-bound train just as passengers were preparing to step off at the station, according to GRP.

The dispute escalated, and Shinde allegedly stabbed Singh in the abdomen with a sharp object on platform 1 of Malad station before fleeing. CCTV footage showed him running through the platform into a crowd.

A police officer said that the incident unfolded suddenly, and the attacker got off the train and fled. Police said that the CCTV footage showed a man panicking wearing a white shirt and blue jeans fleeing across a foot overbridge shortly after the attack. Witnesses who stated that they saw the accused and heard the argument had their statements recorded by the police.

Singh was pronounced dead after being rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkkar hospital in Kandivali. He had sustained a single deep wound to the stomach.

The victim was a professor at the Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. he lived in Malad East with his wife and taught mathematics and statistics the junior college section since 2024.

Shinde has been booked under relevant sections of the BNS.
