Vice president election on Sept 9: Here are states where CP Radhakrishnan and B Sudershan Reddy have numbers

The vice president election will start at 10 am on September 9 and conclude around 5 pm. The votes will be counted at 6 pm.

Less than two months after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice President post on July 21, the stage is set for yet another VP election in the country. NDA has nominated Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate while the INDIA bloc has named former Supreme Court judge Sudershan Reddy its contestant.

The vice president election will start at 10 am on September 9 and conclude around 5 pm. All Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members are part of the electoral college. The votes will be counted at 6 pm.

The combined strength of both Houses is 781 and the winning candidate needs at least 391 votes. The BJP-led NDA has support of 293 MPs in Lok Sabha and 129 MPs in Rajya Sabha. This makes their total tally 422, which is comfortably above the maajority mark. BRS and BJD will abstain from voting.

Major states where CP Radhakrishnan is leading

Uttar Pradesh

NDA has upper hand in Uttar Pradesh with BJP topping with 33 Lok Sabha seats as 24 Rajya Sabha seats. NDA allies RLD has three seats while ADS has 1 seat.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party has 37 LS seats and four RS seats. Congress has six LS seats in UP. Kapil Sibal has one RS seat as an independent member. 

BSP has one Rajya Sabha member while Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) has a Lok Sabha member.

Bihar

NDA is leading the number game in neigbouring Bihar too, with BJP and JDU both having 12 Lok Sabha seats. The former has five RS seats and the latter four. Other NDA allies include Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) with LS members, HAM with a single LS seat and RLM with one RS seat.

The Mahagathbandhan has 16 seats in total. RJD has four LS seats and five RS seats while Congress has three LS seats and a single RS seat. CPI (ML-L) has two LS seats while Independent LS member Pappu Yadav has one LS seat.

Andhra Pradesh

Among NDA allies, TDP has 16 LS seats and two RS seats in Andhra Pradesh. BJP has three MPs in Lok Sabha and two in Rajya Sabha. Pawan Kalyan's Jan Sena Party has two LS seats.

YSRCP, which supports NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan, has four LS seats and seven RS seats.

Karnataka

In Karnataka, NDA has 26 seats in total. BJP has 17 MPs in Lok Sabha and six in Rajya Sabha. JDS has two LS seats and one RS seat.

The Congress has 14 seats in total, including nine in LS and five in RS.

Madhya Pradesh

BJP has 37 seats in total in Madhya Pradesh, of which 29 are Lok Sabha MPs and eight Rajya Sabha members. 

Congress has three Rajya Sabha MPs in Gujarat.

Odisha

In Odisha, BJP has 20 Lok Sabha seats and three Rajya Sabha seats.

Congress has one Lok Sabha seat. BJD, which has seven Rajya Sabha seats, revealed that it will abstain from voting.

Rajasthan

BJP leads in Rajasthan with 19 seats, including 14 in LS and five in RS.

Congress, on the other hand, has eight LS seats and five RS seats. Its allies BAP, RLTP and CPI(M) have one LS seat each.

Major states where B Sudershan Reddy is leading

Maharashtra

The INDIA bloc leads in Maharashtra with 38 seats. Of these, Congress has 13 in LS and three in RS. Shiv Sena (UBT) has nine LS MPs and NCP(SP) has eight LS MPs. Both have two RS seats each. Indepndent candidate Vishal Patil has one Lok Sabha seat.

The NDA has 29 seats in Maharashtra with BJP leading with nine in LS and seven in RS. Shiv Sena has seven Lok Sabha MPs adn one Rajya Sabha MP. NCP has one Lok Sabha seat and three Rajya Sabha seats. RPI(A) has one seat in RS.

West Bengal

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress leads with 28 seats in LS and 13 in RS. Congress has one Lok Sabha MP while CPI(M) has one Rajya Sabha MP. 

BJP, on the other hand, has 12 MPs in LS and two in Rs. The Basirhar Lok Sabha seat is vacant.

Tamil Nadu

DMK has 22 seats in Lok Sabha and 10 in Rajya Sabha while Congress has nine LS seats and one RS seat. Other INDIA bloc allies CPI(M), CPI and VCK have two LS seats each while MDMK and IUML has one each. Kamal Haasan's MNM has one Rajya Sabha seat.

AIADMK does not have any LS seats but it has four RS seats. BJP has drawn a blank in Tamil Nadu. TMC(M) has one Rajya Sabha seat.

Kerala

In Kerala, Congress has 14 LS seats and one RS seat while CPI(M) has one LS seat and three RS seats. IUML has two seats each in both houses while CPI has two RS seats. RSP and KEC have one seat each in LS. Kerala Congress (M) has one RS seat.

BJP has one Lok Sabha seat in Thrissur constituency.

Punjab

AAP has three LS seats in Punjab and six in RS. Congress has seven MPs in Lok Sabha.

BJP has no seats in the state.

Shiromani Akali Dal has one LS seat while Independents Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa have two LS seats each. One Rajya Sabha seat is vacant in Punjab.
